Crynodeb:
Stori yw The Caves of Alienation am ddatgeliad sy’n ymddatod ynglŷn â chymeriad anodd ond difyr Caradock. Mae’r naratif amlochrog yn dilyn ei blentyndod yng Nghymru, wedi’i amddiffyn rhag (ac eto’n agos at) y tlodi yn y cymoedd, yr oedd ei deulu ei hun wedi helpu i’w greu, ei brofiad cyntaf o ryw, ei lwyddiant llenyddol yn Llundain a’i ymgiliad terfynol i Gymru.
Ond y dull gafaelgar sydd i’r dweud sy’n rhoi ei athrylith i The Caves of Alienation.
Fe’i dywedir o sawl safbwynt, rhai ohonynt yn gwrthdaro, ond pob un yn perthyn. Cyfeillion a gelynion, gwrthwynebwyr llenyddol, cariadon, beirniaid, mae’r ‘cofiant swyddogol’ a hyd yn oed rhaglenni dogfen teledu a radio’n brwydro gyda’i gilydd yn y naratif gyda’u darnau eu hunain (sydd weithiau’n ffug) o’r gwirionedd. Mae’r cyfan oll yn mynd ati i greu rhywbeth lliwgar a chynhyrfus i’w ddarllen, sy’n ddoniol a dwys am yn ail, ond byth yn troi oddi wrth ei bortread o Caradock a’i fyfyrdodau dyfnaf.
Mae’r frawddeg tour de force yn un sy’n cael ei gorddefnyddio, ond anaml y bu ei ddefnyddio’n cael ei gyfiawnhau mor llawn.
