Crynodeb:
Disgrifiad prydferth a phersonol o’r amser a dreuliwyd gan Brenda Chamberlain ar Ynys Roegaidd Ydra yn y 1960au cynnar yw A Rope of Vines – Journal from a Greek Island.
Darlunnir y môr a’r harbwr, y mynydd a’r fynachlog, ei chymdogion a’i chyfeillion mewn modd cofiadwy; y rhain oedd y realiti y tu allan i’w hunan tra oddi mewn roedd gwrthdaro emosiwn a dyheadau’n brwydro sydd hefyd yn dod yn fywyn y gyfrol. Mae llawenydd a thrallod yn cael eu plethu’n fân yn y cofnod hwn: and harbour, mountain and monastery, her neighbours and friends are unforgettably pictured; these were the reality outside herself while within there was a conflict of emotion and warring desires which is also vividly brought to life. Joy and woe are woven fine in this record: hyfrydwch myrdd o brofiadau newydd yn tyrru’r synhwyrau, y dioddefaint yr ymddengys ohono gyda dealltwriaeth newydd am ei hun ac am y fodolaeth ddynol.
Mae A Rope of Vines – Journal from a Greek Island yn gyflawniad hyglod o ran dwysedd a grym yr ysgrifennu a’r darluniau huawdl o’r ynys.

Ganed Brenda Chamberlain ym Mangor ym 1912. Yn ystod yr Ail Ryfel Byd gweithiodd gyda’i gŵr ar gynhyrchu’r Caseg Broadsheets. Ym 1947 aeth i fyw ar Ynys Enlli, lle’r arhosodd hyd 1961. Wedi chwe blynedd ar Ynys Roegaidd Ydra, dychwelodd i Fangor; yno, yn isel ei hysbryd a chyda phroblemau ariannol, y bu farw o orddos o dabledi cysgu ym 1971. Cyhoeddwyd A Rope of Vines ym 1965.

Rhagflas byr

I have returned to the good mothers of Efpraxia while my friend Leonidas serves sentence for manslaughter of an English tourist in the port of Ydra.
I am putting my thoughts together, for here the mind can clear itself. The nuns ask only simple questions, I have freedom to come and go as I please, no games of pretence are being played as they are every day of the week on the waterfront, I can take a siesta in a juniper tree if I feel like it.
